New HFEA report - State of the fertility sector 2023/4

New data from the recently published State of the fertility sector 2023/24 report shows that serious incidents in the UK fertility sector remain rare, with over 99% of the almost 100,000 cycles being carried out without incident.

Our report provides a snapshot of the HFEA’s regulatory work for the year, covering the number of inspections, reported incidents, and non-compliances. Further data on licenced clinics and ovarian hyper-stimulation syndrome (OHSS) can be found in the underlying dataset.

Upcoming HFEA publications

Family formations in fertility treatment 2022

The next HFEA data report is the second 'Family formations in fertility treatment 2022' report to be published in Winter 2024/25 following the first report in 2020.

Our upcoming report will provide the latest UK statistics on NHS funding, IVF, donor insemination, and egg freezing for mixed sex, female same-sex and single patients.

National Patient Survey 2024

Thank you to those who shared the HFEA’s third National Patient Survey which ran from 2 September - 9 October.

Our survey explored the patient experience of fertility treatment across the UK, from initial GP access to the most recent treatment, with patient feedback collected playing a pivotal role in shaping the future of this sector.

The latest report on patient experience is expected to be published in Spring 2025 and follows the report published in 2022.

Fertility treatment 2023: preliminary trends and figures

Our annual update on the number and type of patients treated, the different treatments they had, and the pregnancy and birth rates of fertility treatments is expected to be published in Summer 2025, following our report published in 2024.

Upcoming HFEA webinar - Accessing the UK national fertility register for research 5 February 2025

Register here for our upcoming webinar

On 5 February 2025, the HFEA will host our first webinar for researchers interested in accessing data from the UK national fertility register.

The HFEA has collected data on all IVF and donor insemination treatments undertaken in UK licensed clinics since 1 August 1991, with this believed to be the longest running dataset of its kind. Our register holds information on fertility treatments, patients, partners, donors and children born as a result of treatment. More information about the register is available on the data research webpage.

The webinar will provide researchers with information on UK national register data, details on the application process, and an opportunity to ask questions about accessing data for research.

Horizon scanning in fertility research - Scientific and Clinical Advances Advisory Committee (SCAAC)

The Scientific and Clinical Advances Advisory Committee (SCAAC), comprised of Authority members and external advisors, held its last meeting of the year on 7 October 2024.

The committee was joined by the team at Newcastle Fertility Centre who presented progress on their Mitochondrial Donation Programme. This was followed by discussions on human stem cell-based embryo models, in vitro derived gametes, and the 14-day rule for embryo research.

Details of previous meetings including agendas, papers, and minutes can be found on the SCAAC homepage.

Recent HFEA presentations on national fertility register data

  • As seen in our social media post, the HFEA showcased our award-winning dashboard at the Royal Statistical Society International Conference 2024 in Brighton and virtually at DataConnect24.
  • The HFEA presented findings from the Ethnic diversity in fertility treatment 2021 report to social scientists at the International Symposium on Medically Assisted Reproduction: Health, Social and Demographic Aspects in Italy from 16-18 September.

The HFEA will attend the upcoming Fertility Conference 2025 in Liverpool from 8-11 January 2025. Please reach out to register.research@hfea.gov.uk to arrange any in-person discussions on using HFEA data in research at the event.
